For disclosure, this trip from the Philippines costed around USD 1000 per person for two people. Things may become cheaper or more expensive depending on when and where you book your flights and accommodation, and what food you eat. Mine was relatively more expensive given that this was a last minute trip with booking decided less than a month prior to departure on peak season.

Recommendations before going to Taipei:

1. Book your flights and accommodations on sale as early as possible. This is a no brainer but we would have saved a good $200 each on flights and accommodations if we booked even just a month in advance, more if it were not peak season.

2. Spend the weekend there and leave on a Monday (or Tuesday). Taipei has a busy night market/nightlife until around 10 pm when activities end. There are a lot of street performers that you can watch, especially during weekends. I advise leaving on a Monday since the museums and some other tourist attractions are actually closed on Mondays so it's a good time to leave. However, if you have extra time, you can spend your Monday on a quieter attraction like Tamsui or use it to travel to another part of Taiwan.

3. Research how to exchange your cash for local currency. This is for those who aren't USD based. Local exchange rates are NOT competitive and for the Philippines, bank exchange seem to be our best best but you'll need time and other documents. ATM withdrawal is what I did but I wish I did the former.

R (person I went with) and I saved money by going on a budget airline and having no check-in baggage. However, we stayed in a hotel which was more expensive than a hostel but was well worth it IMO, for the privacy and the amenities. We stayed at Hotel Papa Whale which was in Ximending (a very good spot, especially for those who like the nightlife). I recommend staying there especially as it is connected to Driftwood, a bar known for their craft beers. You can literally drink then go to your hotel room. Note that the rooms do not have windows, which should not be a problem if you plan to spend most of your time outside. I do NOT recommend getting their breakfast buffet as its very uninspired and you're better of filling up for cheaper at your local restaurants and even at the convenience stores instead.

4. Prebook everything you can before hand: This is obviously not sponsored but I recommend checking prices and using a service that bundles and makes things easier, like Klook. We used Klook to book a lot of things for the discounts: easycard, museum tickets, geopark tickets and tour group discount. Aside from minimizing costs via bulk discounting, it is also to minimize expenses that come from booking using the local currency.

Depending on your itinerary, it may be cheaper to book for a 3 day pass with a different card along with airport transfers but we chose to get a preloaded easy card instead since our flight arrived way too early and we didn't want to wait a minute longer than we should have. I'd recommend getting the former if you arrive at normal hours.

Extra: budget airlines have terrible hours and everything in the airports close early. However, there is a convenience store that is easily accessible and the airport as free wifi and charging stations so you won't have a hard time waiting for the metro or bus lines to open.

5. Join the raffle (for 2024 and 2025). Look up the link for Taiwan the Lucky Land.Tourists have a chance to win NTD 5,000 just by going to Taiwan. Neither R nor I won but the guy behind us won.

Once in Taiwan and you've got your loaded Easy Card or Metro Pass/iCard (counter opening at 7 am), take the Express (purple train) to the main station and to your hotel/hostel. You can leave any luggage behind even before you check-in in the afternoon.

Here is the list of locations/activities I recommend doing:

Day 1:
AM
Peace Park
National Museum
Presidential Hall
Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall - changing of the guard every hour

PM
National Palace Museum
Red House
Ximending Road

Note that the museums close at 5 pm (you should be done by 4:30). There is also a 45 minute to 1 hour travel time to the national museum so you should budget your time accordingly. If you do have time, I would recommend spending an entire day on the National Palace Museum alone.

Day 2:

AM to PM
Yehliu, Jiufen and Shufen

Highly recommend taking a bus/car tour. A bus tour is definitely not leisurely but allows you to see a good number of sights. I had a full tea experience at Jiufen but it was definitely on the expensive side: I paid for the tea and for each person with me (totaling NTD 950 for 30 minutes of chilling in a tea house) but well worth it for me as it was served beautifully and traditionally and was something in my must do list. Note that other tea houses may be cheaper or more expensive and the tea I got was a midrange tea so prices will vary. You can also do the entire lantern experience for NTD 200-250.

PM
Temple Hopping
Ximending Road

Our tour ended around 6 PM so we decided to go to a temple (we ended up in Longshan and the night market) but you may have time to visit more depending on the time of day and tour you book. Of course, we ended back at Ximending since it was on our way back to the hotel.

Day 3:
AM
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall- changing of the guard at every hour
Songshan District/Songshan Ci Hui Temple
Elephant Mountain

PM
Taipei 101
Xinyi district

This is a good time to shop at the higher end malls or to go to a temple. We did the former since we met up with some people but if not, I would recommend the latter. By around 4 PM, start making your way to Elephant Mountain. R went all the way to the top but I stopped halfway because it was too difficult for me as a lazy girl.

After the sunset, we walked to Taipei 101 and went up the observatory. Everything up was expensive so we bought some exclusive souvenirs there but we ended up at the basement for dinner. We walked around a bit at Xinyi district watching the performers. However, for those with money to burn, this is a good place to burn cash with BV, Chanel, Diore Loewe, LV, YSL everywhere.

We spent an extra day in Taipei and spent it at Tamsui, but if we had the time, it would have been nice to spend a full week to see the lakes and the hot springs. Maybe on the next trip.

Estimate of expenses:
Flight USD 200 per person
Accommodations USD 200 per person for 3 nights (400 for 2 people with a breakfast buffet we regretted)
Prebooked tour and expenses USD 100 per person.

Costs can vary depending on where you come from, and where you go within Taipei. In the Philippines, tickets can get very cheap depending on seat sale bookings and I believe this can easily go down to 100-150 USD with judicious planning. Note that our flight did not include the ~30 USD terminal fee for a frankly terrible airport. We each loaded around 700 NTD including the initial 400 NTD our easy cards came with and it was enough for 4 days. If you do stay for 3 days or less and don't mind waiting a bit, you can save the extra USD 5 by going for other Klook offers.

The rest of our expenses were on food, extra transportation, souvenirs and extras. R was able to go under USD 800 (we each loaded NTD 700 on our cards but I spent a significant amount more T__T (I paid for lantern and tea since they were activities I wanted to do. I also spent a significant amount of milk tea as well because when in Taipei...)

All in all, I strongly believe that with good planning, anyone can do a 3 day tour in Taipei for under 1,500 USD per person (depending on airfare) and well under USD 1000 if you come from the Philippines.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-56537767666131314362023-09-26T23:25:00.000+08:002023-09-26T23:25:04.294+08:00MASK EMPTIES 2023

Listing some of the masks I've used over the year and how I feel about them. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. However, I have here a quick guide to keeping those armpits smelling fresh however long you need them.

Products above are my current go to products.

First things first, these all have antiperspirant components. I've found that while deodorants smell cute, they don't last long once you start sweating if you naturally have the bacteria that turns your sweat into nuclear weapons. I've found that deodorants only work on me if I nuke my pits beforehand so it's inhospitable to life - and that leads to irritation and skin darkening so I've abandoned that route.

If you are the type of person that eschews antiperspirants, you had best be washing those pits frequently and reapplying deodorant as you go. Clean and sanitize your stick (or use a deodorant that's hard to contaminate) between each use, and ideally between armpits, as to avoid trapping bacteria there that will turn your deodorant into an actual source of stink.

But before applying product on your pits, you'd better clean them beforehand. Ideally, remove hair there since hair grabs on to things like dirt and sweat and oil. If you're not into that then just make sure to make sure its as clean as possible. I use regular soap but some prefer using astringents, acids and antibacterials. I've found that these more aggressive products work but can be too irritating so I've limited using those options only if I really do need that extra safety net. Pits should be completely dry unless you're using an alum stick as I do most days.

Just right after bathing, I use an antiperspirant. My daily driver is the Deonat Mineral Deodorant Stick since I can use it in the shower as a base before using another pit product. I love that it's cheap and lasts a crazy long time.

I also really like using the Fresh Sgt. At Arms (old reformulation) as a single use product on "light days" where it's not too hot or I'm not expecting to be out a lot. I've yet to try the newer formulation in newer packaging since I'm hesitant to pull the trigger because it looks like a very big price increase from before. It's now similar in price to the Snoe Beauty spray antiperspirant as well which I did like until the nozzle began to fail at the end of its life.

On 24 hours days I'll use a cream deodorant-antiperspirant combo like Dove Deodorant Dry Serum on top of my potassium alum Deonat base. On crazy sweaty days and 36 to 48 hours days I'll use a more heavy option like Secret Platinum Protection. I have a tried a few prescription strength products but I've found that they're very expensive and a bit overkill in terms of anti-perspirants strength and not very friendly to my skin health generally as they tend to stink. As I'm less likely to use them, they've all eventually expired. I think those with a more hyperhidrosis problem causing stink may benefit from prescription level products and I'm just not one of them.

Lastly, at the end of the day, I sniff my shirts (gross, but necessary) to see if any areas are stinky. I'll pretreat those spots with soap and/or colorsafe bleach to make sure I get rid of the stink that can be a source of smelly sauce even if my actual armpit skin smells fine. It also helps decrease the chances of unfavorable bacteria winning the war in the warzone that is the armpit.

I hope this helps someone out there.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-1254403032594075452023-04-02T20:55:00.003+08:002023-04-28T23:29:34.154+08:00HARU HARU Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner
Bought the HARU HARU Wonder Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner last year because of the hype and the stunning packaging but didn't consistently use it because when I opened the bottle, it was 1. Fragranced 2. Stung my eyes.

Thus it sat on my desk until I found my skin to be dehydrated since it was my only hydrating toner on hand.

HARU HARU did release an unscented version but I had dehydrated skin an this giant 150ml bottle so I decided to use it up. Here are my thoughts:

Despite my hopes that there are some benefits to this because of the black rice ferment that's supposed to have skin care benefits, the main heavy hitter is glycerin (and betaine- edited). Mixed with other things, yes, but now that we're somehow moving away from HA, glycerin seems to be coming back as an old, unsung hero.

I used a generous amount (initially at night given the lavender scent), avoiding the eye area. It gives the skin a quick and long lasting burst of hydration even at first application with that mochi consistency. However, I've found that while I can layer it with other products easily, I can't use a second layer of it with itself since it just ends up being a sticky mess.

Once I got used to the scent, I began using it in the morning as well. I use this as a middle layer between a non-hydrating active/product and a moisturizer/heavier layer as a hydrator.

All in all, its a nice product for its price range (500-600 Php or around 10-12 USD for 150 ml) with possible long term benefits. It reminds me of a levelled up version of the Face Shop Ceramide toner.

I may repurchase the unscented version in a while since I like having a hydrating staple on hand but I have FOMO on possibly better choices so I guess I'll have to see.

All in all, I'd recommend this as a simple toner for those who don't want to spend on this step.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-46034471904000952942023-02-08T00:39:00.000+08:002023-02-08T00:39:15.662+08:00Empties of 2022

These were the empties I managed to save up before I tossed them:

A lot of these are old things that I haven't been able to toss but I'm not actually sure if I've been able to review all of them.

Bella Curls Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner- really appreciated these once my hair got really long since I was using it for travel beforehand. Peptide Facial toner with Hyaluronic Acid and 3 peptides ( Palmitoyl Tripeptide -1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide -7 and Acetyl Hexapeptide -8. Picked this up because this was less than Php 600 (~$12) for a whopping 200 ml. This is not one of their more popular products. And after a few months of use I have my thoughts on why.

For starters, this is very mild. It has aloe leaf extract, propanediol and glycerin as its base before reaching your *star* ingredients, which are still above its extracts so it may still have a good enough amount to have actual activity on the skin. However, peptides are for the long term, and this didn't have any magic that made me want to stick to it long enough to make a difference.

To be fair, I enjoyed using it last summer when my skin was more oily and I needed a light hydrator. It's a bit thick in texture for a water and hydrates lightly with an initial stick. You can feel the glycerin bit but it dries down quite quickly.

However. After using it as my main hydrator for a few months, I found that my skin was a good bit more dehydrated and dryer than expected. I'd been using it as a single layer since it was a bit too thick to layer with a moisturizer over it and an antioxidant under but it wasn't quite cutting it. It's not fair to the product as a peptide facial toner, but it's not quite there as a hydrating facial toner and I wanted something that would give me both a great short and long term benefit. Tall shoes for a bargain item.

Unfair to the product? Maybe. But I don't think I'm going to repurchase this because I can't bring myself to stick to it without being sure that those peptides are actually doing anything. However, more balanced skins that want a bit of hydration and a are a bit curious about peptides - at a friendly price might want to give it a try.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-27542009920263474722022-03-21T20:20:00.001+08:002022-03-21T20:20:19.946+08:00Thyra Lip Oil in Y07
I've been dead and empty - and empty-less for a few months, but one I've almost finished (before my tragic loss of said product) is the Thyra Lip Oil I've been using for a few months.

This came as a recommendation from C, and I'm glad I bought it.

I bought my oil from Shoppee for Php 320 (~$6). As such even though it's been a bit boring, I'm trying to do what's best for my skin. Here are the things I've been using like crazy AND emptied, starting with complete empties.

1. Timeless 20% Vitamin C+E Ferrulic Acid Serum - I'm glad this is so difficult to source. I told myself I woudn't buy it but I ended up repurchasing because it really is that good. If I get another breakout, I'm definitely repurchasing this again. But it's really too expensive for me to use it all year round so I'm glad it's difficult to source.

2. Dove Deodorant Dry Serum Intensive Renew - Okay, I'm not 100% I've reviewed this here before since I can't find the review but I'm pretty sure I mentioned it somewhere, but this isn't my first tube. Honestly didn't expect to buy this again but I've been working out more than I've been expecting and this is good for reducing BO from exercising and the darkness from friction during those high intensity arm movements. I'm keeping one around but I'm not using it as much now that I'm exercising less. Still a good thing to have on hand especially s it's so cheap and often goes on sale. I'm on my third tube.

I have a little bit of these next two left, but not much at all. I'm going to call it as I'm pretty sure it won't last the year.

3. In Her Element Rosewater Moisture Mist - it looks like this product is being discontinued so I'm on the lookout for a new mist (I have one technically expired bottle left so it's not urgent) but I haven't seen anything as good (packaging and performance-wise) for its price point right now. An all time favorite I'll be sad to see go.

4. Celeteque Acne Solutions Acne Spot Corrector Gel - I just keep repurchasing this because I like the tube packaging and how gentle it is despite having so many ingredients. It's not actually the strongest or fastest spot corrector so these are best for smaller bumps but it's also very good quality for its price. I ended up buying the 15 ml one (and finishing it) after repeat purchases of the 5 ml one. I'm scared to try korean spot correctors since they're usually on the gentler and more occlusive/comedogenic side while western ones are usually super harsh. It's hard to find a happy medium.

Lastly, not pictured but repeatedly purchased and emptied.

5. Assorted dermatologic products - because while it's still a bit of trial and error, if they work, they work. Highly recommend a consult if needed.

I have a couple more repurchases but they're not at this level of empty or I've already thrown them out. Some are almost there though. Let's see again next year.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-20864002700819980372021-12-06T17:30:00.002+08:002021-12-06T17:30:31.695+08:00The Better Skin Project: Pimple Fighting + Lightening Bar
Given to me by C and I'm glad I got to try it. This is an empty but it was a green soap that would murder my face. However, it's excellent both for acne prone skin on the body and as a solution to prevent those nasty odors coming out from exercising. That is, if that is a problem for you.

This product contains coconut oil as a first ingredient. Then water, sodium hydroxide and fragrance before its touted extracts: bearberry, rosehip oil, papaya extract and mastic gum and rounding off with some preservatives and colorants.

As it's very high in pH, being a real soap, I wouldn't recommend it on facial skin. I think it should only be used every two days on body skin, but your milage may vary and you may tolerate more or less.

I'd recommend this for body use on teen skin, or those with resistant skin and resistant acne. I didn't see it as a lightening bar since I'm not consistent with its use, but it's definitely pimple fighting. I do recommend using a sunscreen if you are using this for its whitening purpose.

Either way, please remember to use lotion afterwards as while I don't find it that drying, it may be more harsh on some people's skin, even with infrequent use.

The soap is available online for Php 149 for 1 bar with promos for bundled purchases.

I won't be buying just yet because I have a lot to go through, but I might purchase this for next summer when I get more acne.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-35824977556466226532021-11-19T17:45:00.000+08:002021-11-19T17:45:09.441+08:00Sofy Pad Comparison
I did a menstrual pad review a long while back then semi-transitioned to reusable pads. It took me a while but I've finally run through my stash of Sofy pads and I can now form my thoughts about them.

Though I don't have pictures this time, I've been using:

1. Sofy Comfort Nite 35.5 cm

2. Sofy Comfort Nite 42.5 cm

3. Sofy Cooling Fresh 35 cm

And of the three, there's one I won't be repurchasing.

And that's the Sofy Comfort Nite 42.5 cm. I never thought I'd find a pad that's too long for me. But this is it. I'm not too fond of it since all the extra length is at the back and my underwear cannot compete with it. This is for spectacularly heavy back-leakers and that's not me. I'd prefer something that elongates both in front and in the back and the wings are just not cooperating. At Php 129 for 8 pieces or Php 16 per piece, it's not the most expensive pad I've tried but it's not one I'd buy again.

I do like the Sofy Cooling Fresh 35 cm pad which has a dry net and absorbs more quickly than the usual. This says its cooling and it does seem slightly cooler? It's definitely good bit thinner than the usual, and absorbs more odour. I don't use it very often since I'm scared it will cause issues if used constantly, but I do like using it when I go out in tighter clothing because of said effects. At Php 155 for 9 pieces or Php 17 per piece, it's a bit more expensive but I do use it very rarely and it is worth the expense of a more secure pad for special occasions.

Lastly, my old favorites, the Sofy Comfort Nite at 35 cm are still a good buy for me.At Php 164 for 16 pesos or Php 10.25 for the comfort and security it gives. I'm using reusable pads primarily now but I'm still going to have this on hand until a better deal comes on.

Bang for Buck: Sofy Comfort Nite 35 cm

Special Events: Sofy Cooling Fresh 35 cm

All three go on sale so find a good time to get a better deal when buying. I'm actually going to try the Charmee super long ones before I commit to another Sofy purchase since I need to know what combination of Cooling versus Comfort Nite I'll be repurchasing (or if I'll be repurchasing the Comfort Nite at all :P).
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-52386565307502612962021-11-04T13:40:00.002+08:002021-11-04T13:40:38.930+08:00The Saem Cover Perfection Tip Concealer
I haven't used a foundation in a while. Because masking and the resultant acne has made me wary of using base products, it just doesn't seem worth it. So now instead of using a foundation, I've been heavily spot concealing since it's been needed because of my foundation use causing a previous break out. Cry.

Thankfully, while my current concealer isn't mask proof. It doesn't break me out. 100 points. And what have I been using for the past year? The Saem's Cover Perfection Tip Concealer.

But a warning for users.

I purchased two shades, 1.25 Light Beige and 1.5 Neutral Beige since I purchased these online and wasn't able to swatch beforehand. Yes, I'm always late to the party but I like to save money and I was able to purchase these on sale for Php 150 (~$4) apiece. I was hoping 1.25, the lighter shade, would work for my undereye and 1.5 for spot concealing. However, I ended up using 1.5 for my undereye as my actual skin was darker than I expected at that time. It wasn't until the end of the rainy season that I became pale enough to use 1.5 for my blemishes.

The photo above shows 1.25 on top and 1.5 below. If you can see below each bar is how I actually typically wear the product, which makes it near invisible. Or so I thought.

Anyway, once I became a bit lighter, I actually ended up using 1.5 more than I did before: it was now a good shade match that worked spectacularly. Most importantly for me, even with mask use it didn't break me out. It's very pigmented so I needed only the slightest dab to conceal, but blends well enough with just fingers so I can touch up as needed, though I generally only have to do it after a few hours of mask use.

However, my problem was with 1.25 - Light Beige. I can't use it for my undereye without significant toggling. The shade is still a bit too bright and reads grey on me. I can correct it with a peach colored powder for color correction, which is fine if I do set my makeup. But this doesn't crease on me so I find it a bit of a hassle as an extra daily step.

I wish I knew that 1.25 and 1.5 had different undertones as well as being lighter in shade. I'm not good enough to spot it myself so I guess this is a learning experience for me. I'm going to see if I can use 1.25 as an eye base else I'll have to declutter it. But I am very fond of 1.5 and I see why it's so popular.

FYI, this is supposed to be a dupe for a higher end popular concealer. But since I haven't tried that, I can't compare.

I'm very hesitant to splurge on make-up since I usually end up breaking out from it. I'm glad to find an acne-friendly item that won't break the bank so I'm glad to have 1.5 - Neutral Beige. I'm hoping The Saem actually expands this range further, but once things get back to normal I might actually go out and purchase a darker shade for summer.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-68576333228816804442021-10-30T15:29:00.000+08:002021-10-30T15:29:18.340+08:00Five Fails of 2021
I have officially ended my official one-month (October) no-buy for 2021. Because let's face it. November's 11.11 is something I probably won't be passing up. Or Black Friday. Idk. But before that, let's talk about things I should not have purchased this 2021.

There are only a few of them, thankfully. But I have all the regrets.

1. Really cheap rubber shoes

I don't have a picture of these, but I bought a couple of pairs of really cheap "Rubber Shoes" from Shopee. The kind of shoes that are less than Php 100 (~$2.5). And you really get what you pay for. These shoes are more like durable slippers. The ones I have only used once or twice are still alive, cute and kicking. But there was a pair I wore for two weeks straight and that went straight to the bin after since they were already so damaged after. They probably were bin worthy after ten days since I did feel a difference in the wear but didn't really check until the two week mark. Granted, this was heavy use and I think casual use would make them last much longer. But doing the math, I'd be using one pair every two weeks and would be spending Php 2,400 for replacements a year. One good pair from a reputable brand would cost me under Php 2,000 so this sort of purchase would be more expensive in the long run as well as being terrible for the environment. I should really think more about product quality than cuteness.

However, those who can't afford to buy more expensive shoes might want to buy them since they are pretty cute. But they have to be really taken care of and that's not what rubber shoes are for me.

2. An old Elf Lip Crayon

Okay, I didn't buy this, this was given to me by a well meaning relative. But this is just crap. I don't know if it's because it's super old but this smells and looks terrible. This is going straight in the bin since I can't even use it as a crayon-crayon. Luckily, I don't need to buy any lip products, but I've been consoling myself by shopping my stash because of this.

I have my latest Revlon Lip Crayon which for lip oil reasons, I haven't opened yet. But I'll be opening that instead of buying a new crayon or balm.

3. A terrible eye lash curler

I bought this thinking it's a novel lash curler and since I had trouble curling my lashes, this could be the way for me. But nope. this is an eye injury waiting to happen. Throwing this away just in case I get tempted to reuse it. But I've bought a better, cheap lash curler and there is no reason for anyone to buy this.

4. A useless eye brush

I bought this as part of a set of cheap make-up brushes. Most of the brushes are just alright, one brush is being repurposed because it's just too scratchy to use. But this one has no use for me that I can think of. I can't even use it as a nail brush because it's just so terrible.

I'd still recommend trying out cheaper brushes if you're not a big make-up user, but buyer beware.

5. A standard beauty item: nail scrub brush

Also not pictured because it's a bit gross now from scrubbing the scum under my nails. I got it from Watsons and it's just way too soft to be that useful. I'd recommend using surgical brushes instead. You can buy the non-iodinated ones and use it for a long time. It's slightly more expensive over time but its far less effort than using soft, long bristled nail brushes.

At least now I know what I'll be buying for November: a decent pair of rubber shoes, a set of surgical hand and nail brushes and a certain type of make-up brush.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-59437813370563761392021-10-26T22:14:00.001+08:002021-10-26T22:14:25.518+08:00Fresh Formula The Daily Grind
I was actually going to do a long post about this, but then I saw Fresh Formula is closing down!

Suffice to say, I've been loving their Daily Dose low pH cleanser, as you may have seen in my previous skin care routine.

The toner, not so much. It’s heavily pigmented, but doesn’t accentuate my fine lines or dry my lips up. While I can’t really feel it, it doesn’t sink into the skin so it tends to slip around a lot. Lip liners help, but it’s a bit too much effort daily. Still, it’s absolutely disastrous when wearing a mask. If real life swatches are still a thing, this is something that definitely should be swatched – especially for those with dark pigmented lips like mine as it’s a good color with excellent pay-off.

All in all, I’ve been trying to “shop my stash” more so to speak and have had a wonderful time rediscovering old favorites. The scent doesn't last long but it's still a nice shower treat that gives a sweet, dark fruity scent that lasts an hour or two afterward (enough to keep calm before bed).

And at Php 85 (~$2) for 200 ml, it's a real steal.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-68077735809067521562021-10-12T23:22:00.000+08:002021-10-12T23:22:03.390+08:00Minimalist Skincare
I've been travelling again and not seeing the sun so this has been my most minimal skincare routine that I've actually been pretty happy with.

Review to follow if ever but... if you're interested

1. And like most people, I've turned to home workouts, mostly on YT. And despite the free workouts, I've been too cheap to shell out for home workout things.

It took me a long while to start using weights. And knowing that I was unsure about them, I decided to use water bottles as my weights. I started at 350 ml then at 500 ml. Yes, very low. But all I could really use for the things I was doing.

It took me a while to get to 1L or 2.2 lbs. Because I didn't want to go up and I had a hard time finding a water bottle I could grip comfortably. But I finally did.

These Refresh 1L bottles are very easy to grip. You have to use it with your index and thumb in the depression, so sometimes the bottle is upside down, but I've screwed it on tight and taped it jusr in case.

I've been using these for a while and am on the look-out if some 1.5L and 2L bottles may be good alternatives. Before I look at actual dumbells.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-3217998002803896792021-09-06T01:37:00.002+08:002021-09-09T04:14:15.750+08:00List of Things: Discontinued or Reformulated Products I Loved
From having no budget to buy, to hoarding, to buying just what I can consume in a short while, I've decided to start getting back-ups of things I love as long as they're stable/I'm sure to finish it in time for expected expiration.

Why? Here's a list of products that have left my world too soon:

(will be edited as things change)

1. Skintel Soap- the first exfoliant soap I tried that worked. Discontinued a decade ago, may have returned but was not the same according to ingredients.

2. Godiva Vitamin C - I'm not sure if anyone remembers this, but this was my first Vitamin C product. Very unstable but the bottles were tiny. Very basic.

<strike>3. Derm-A Tretinoin - came with a free moisturizer which was not so good, but good for hand cream. My first tretinoin</strike> edit: spotted in shopee recently. how???

4. Biore Aqua Gel 2015 - is it nostalgia? I have a different all time favorite but I really liked this one as it was available in-store.

5. Hada Labo everything pre-2020 - massive reformulation in 2020. Supposed to be better or same as before but MAY break me out. Might retry in a few years but not now.

6. AHC Hyaluronic Toner 2017 - Korean products like to reformulate and I discovered it too late. Really good though..

7. Stieva-A Tretinoin - my favorite tretinoin. Gone forever. Nothing was like you (at that price).

8. Thermaclear - you were so expensive and now u gone. Ugh, money.

9. Bench Fix Styling Stick - You were perfect for perfect ponytails/buns. Now you have to buy the japanese matomage things.

10. In Her Element Rose Gel Cleanser - so fancy at a not too fancy price. I would have repurchased you eventually had you been around... you are already missed.

There are a bunch of other things, but these are what (beauty products) I truly mourn for. Cry.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1517302384355307422.post-79784339672677443962021-08-28T23:11:00.001+08:002021-08-28T23:11:48.612+08:00Soul Apothecary Glow Serum
There are some things in life that just aren't meant to be. And that pretty much describes my relationship with Soul Apothecary's Glow Serum.

It wasn't meant to be. But how I wish it was...

While I was very curious about Soul Apothecary's Vitamin C products, I was hesitant for the longest time since L-Ascorbic Acid was notoriously unstable. However, I was finally too curious about and bought it on impulse. At Php 295 ($6) for 15 ml, it was decently priced that I felt that I could afford to try it.

It came well sealed with the expiration date more than a year after purchase. The dropper dispensed a clear, viscuous fluid that smelt metallic, but was quickly absorbed in the skin. I was shocked about how they were able to make it so stable, but I found that the ingredients list listed on the site I bought it from and the ingredients on the actual bottle were quite different. While the sites give vitamin C as the second ingredient, my bottle says

Ingredients: water, glycerin, butylene glycol, astaxanthin, tocopherol, sodium hyaluronate, niacinamide, ascorbic acid, hydroxyl cellulose, octanoyl hydroxamic acid, 1,2-heaxanedione

Was this a reformulation? I don't know. But I wish they did list it properly because I would not have purchased it had I seen the list. Why? Because what I knew would happen, happened.

I have been blessed /s with sensitive, acne-prone skin with seborrheic dermatitis (and additional "fungal acne" once triggered). And this broke me out. The vitamin C content was too low for me. While it had more active ingredients with the additional niacinamide and astaxanthin antioxidant, plus a little sodium hyaluronate and glycerin, the balance was wrong. I'd need a higher percentage in order to counteract whatever acnegenic substance was in there, most probably the tocopherol.

Mind you, the break-out was mild. I loved using it because it was so smoothing and quick to absorb. However, I got a tiny bump every use. Desperately hoping it wasn't so (as I was generally on a break out), I continued until I couldn't deny that this was problematic. Then I found it a new home in my mother's skincare cabinet.

Andddd...

MY MOTHER LOVES IT.

It really made it both softer and brighter with just one use. It's going to be a repurchase... for my mother. I'd recommend this for any skin type without seborrheic dermatitis/malessezia folliculitis. I truly believe this will benefit most skins. Sadly, just not mine.

I've actually repurchased Timeless's Vitamin C since I was so sad about this not suiting me.

Lyf.
Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07168655501700375208noreply@blogger.com0
